Overview
Trek through the Tsum Valley — a sacred Tibetan Buddhist pilgrimage valley in the Gorkha district of Nepal that remained closed to foreigners until 2008 and still requires a special permit — through Nubri and Tsum communities whose language, dress, and culture retain an intact pre-modern Tibetan character almost entirely lost across the border. The route visits the Milarepa cave monastery at Rachen Gompa and the high meadows above the Nepal-Tibet border. Round trip from Arughat takes 18-22 days; teahouses along the route have improved significantly since opening.
