Climb to the ice cap of the Rwenzori Mountains — the Mountains of the Moon, rising to 5,109 m on the Uganda-DRC border — through an extraordinary sequence of vegetation zones: bamboo, then heather forest, then giant lobelias and groundsels in the Afro-alpine zone, then glacial moorland. Margherita Peak on Mount Stanley is the highest point in Uganda and the third highest in Africa. The glaciers are retreating rapidly; the current ice extent is a fraction of what existed in 1900. The circuit takes 7-9 days and involves significant mud and boggy terrain.
