Climb the twin technical peaks of Mount Kenya — Batian (5,199 m) and Nelion (5,188 m) — via the Normal Route on the South East Face, one of the classic rock climbing routes in Africa, requiring Grade IV+ rock climbing ability at altitude in an equatorial glacial environment. The third and more accessible summit of Lenana (4,985 m) is reachable on a 3-day trek from Naro Moru or Sirimon gates without technical equipment. The mountain straddles the equator; the landscape transitions from rainforest through bamboo, heath, moorland, and finally to glaciated rock summits.
