Walk the full Tongariro Northern Circuit — a 43 km loop around the Tongariro volcanic massif that incorporates the world-famous Alpine Crossing and extends beyond it to the Red Crater, Blue Lake, and the north circuit through moraine and alpine meadow. The Alpine Crossing alone takes 7-8 hours; the full circuit takes 3-4 days with hut accommodation. Mount Ngauruhoe (2,291 m) stands in as Mount Doom from The Lord of the Rings; side ascents to the summit add a 2-hour scramble to any circuit day. Active volcanic gases require weather monitoring.
