Walk the full Tongariro Northern Circuit — a 43 km Great Walk looping the volcanic heart of the North Island, taking in the celebrated Alpine Crossing and then leaving its crowds for the lava-bomb moonscape of the Oturere valley and the beech forest around historic Waihohonu Hut. The set piece earns its fame: you scramble up loose scoria to Red Crater's rim at 1,886 m, sulphur sharp on the wind, and below you the Emerald Lakes glow improbable mineral green against the black. By mid-afternoon on the circuit's far side the day-walkers have vanished and you have the mountain almost to yourself. Respect two things. The weather first: this is genuine alpine terrain that can flip from sunshine to whiteout in an hour any month of the year, there is no water on the Crossing section, and the volcanoes are live enough that gas and eruption risk are monitored — check GeoNet alerts before walking. Second, the mountains themselves: Ngauruhoe (Mount Doom to film fans) and the summit craters are tapu to the local iwi, who ask walkers not to climb to the summits — the circuit's viewpoints are better than the scree slog anyway. Book DOC huts months ahead for December-March; around £300 covers hut passes and shuttles.
