Tasmania's iconic 65 km Overland Track runs south from Cradle Mountain to Lake St Clair through the heart of the Tasmanian Wilderness World Heritage Area — one of the last great temperate wilderness areas on Earth. The route passes jagged dolerite peaks, buttongrass moorland, ancient pencil pine groves, and alpine tarns that reflect the sky in perfect stillness. The track is well-maintained with a series of staffed huts, making it accessible to first-time multi-day trekkers who can still carry their own tent for flexibility. Side trips to the summit of Cradle Mountain or Mount Ossa — the state's highest peak — are worth the extra effort for 360° views across a landscape that has been effectively untouched for millennia. Wombats, wallabies, and echidnas wander the campsites at dusk. The final leg descends through ancient myrtle beech forest to the shores of Lake St Clair, Australia's deepest natural lake.
