Overview

Thirty-three kilometres that feel like a highlights reel of the South Island. The Routeburn climbs from red-beech forest at the head of Lake Wakatipu to Harris Saddle, where the moment arrives: you drop your pack, scramble twenty minutes up Conical Hill, and the Hollyford Valley unrolls beneath you all the way to the Tasman Sea. Then it is a balcony traverse high above the valley to Lake Mackenzie, kea wheeling overhead, before the final descent to The Divide in Fiordland. The booking is the crux. Great Walks season (late October to April) huts are released by DOC each autumn and the Routeburn sells out in hours — set an alarm for the release day or accept shoulder-season conditions, when avalanche paths near Harris Saddle can close the alpine section entirely. It is a point-to-point walk: most people start at Routeburn Shelter near Glenorchy and finish at The Divide on the Milford road, using a booked shuttle back to Queenstown or Te Anau. Three days, hut bunks around NZ$102–152 a night for visitors; budget roughly £380 with transport. Fitness required is modest; weather discipline is not optional.
