Tongariro National Park, Waikato · New Zealand
New Zealand's most famous single-day walk traverses the heart of Tongariro National Park — a UNESCO dual World Heritage site and the setting for Mount Doom in the Lord of the Rings films. The 19.4km crossing climbs through steam vents, across the South Crater, over the Red Crater rim at 1,886m, and descends past the Emerald Lakes — volcanic pools tinted brilliant turquoise by mineral deposits — before dropping through subalpine scrub to the Ketetahi trailhead. The walk is one-way, requiring a shuttle bus from either end. The climb to Red Crater is steep — 300m in 2km — and the crater rim is genuinely exposed, with strong cold winds even in midsummer. The descent from Red Crater involves loose scree that is slippery in wet conditions. But the summit view rewards every element of effort: the active volcanic vent of Te Maari, the three peaks of Tongariro, Ngauruhoe, and Ruapehu in profile, and the Blue and Emerald Lakes sitting in the caldera below like alien gemstones. The Crossing is sacred to Maori — Ngāti Tūwharetoa consider the peaks as ancestors rather than mountains. Walk respectfully: do not climb off-trail onto the summit cones, and do not remove rocks or volcanic material. Check the eruption forecast at GeoNet before departure — the Tongariro volcano system had a minor eruption in 2012 and the hazard level fluctuates.
