Overview

Cycle the North Coast 500 — Scotland's answer to Route 66, a 516-mile circular route around the Scottish Highlands from Inverness — past the Old Man of Storr, Smoo Caves, Cape Wrath, Bealach na Ba (the steepest road in Britain), and Torridon's 750-million-year-old Torridonian sandstone mountains. The route is challenging by car and epic by bicycle; the West Coast sections involve punishing climbs and headwinds but deliver the finest cycling scenery in Britain. Midges (Highland biting insects) are a challenge from June to August; good rain gear is essential.
