The roads are quiet, the gradients manageable, and the landscape constantly rewards the slower pace of cycling over driving. Base yourself in guesthouses run by local families who serve plates of sarmale and tuica before you've even hung up your panniers. Climb the Bucegi Mountains on a forest road and coast into Sinaia past the Peles Castle, one of Europe's most extravagant royal residences. The medieval citadel of Sighisoara — birthplace of Vlad the Impaler — is the most atmospheric lunch stop you will ever have.
