Danube Cycle: Vienna to Budapest

Overview

The EuroVelo 6 Danube Cycling Path between Vienna and Budapest is the most beginner-friendly multi-day cycle touring route in Europe: 320km of dedicated riverside path with almost no traffic, consistent elevation gain (the Danube valley is near-flat for almost the entire distance), and a succession of Baroque cities and medieval market towns that provide a cultural counterpoint to the physical progress. Vienna to Bratislava (80km, day one) rolls through the Nationalpark Donau-Auen — a Danube floodplain forest of ash and willow — before the Bratislava skyline appears above the levee. Bratislava's old town deserves an afternoon: its scale is manageable and the castle-hill view over the Danube with the Austrian bank beyond captures the geography of the route perfectly. From Bratislava the path continues southeast through Slovakia and Hungarian border town Esztergom — with the largest basilica in Hungary dominating the river bend above the cycle path — before the final leg into Budapest. The Danube Bend south of Esztergom is the most scenic stretch: the river hairpins through forested hills and the baroque town of Visegrád perches on its promontory above the water. Budapest is the finish: arrive from the path on the north bank, cross the Chain Bridge, and reward yourself with a thermal bath in one of the city's 19th-century spa palaces.
