St-Jean-Pied-de-Port to Santiago de Compostela · France / Spain
Cycling the Camino Francés compresses the 780km pilgrimage from St-Jean-Pied-de-Port to Santiago de Compostela into a fortnight, and it is a different trip from the walk: you cross the meseta's wheat-sea in purposeful mornings, climb O Cebreiro in one push, and still have hours each day for the cathedral cities — Pamplona, Burgos, León — that walkers limp through. The etiquette matters. 'Bicigrinos' give way to walkers everywhere, ring early and pass slow, and at municipal albergues you queue for beds behind pilgrims on foot — often not until 6pm — so most cyclists mix private albergues and small hotels booked a day ahead. You need 200km minimum by bike to claim the Compostela; carry the credencial and collect two stamps a day in Galicia. A gravel bike handles the mixed surfaces best; pure roadies follow the parallel N-135/N-120 corridors. The variable that catches people out is the first day — the Route Napoléon over the Pyrenees is a push-fest with a loaded bike, and the Valcarlos road variant is the wiser line in any weather. Ride May–June or September; budget around £900 for beds, menús del día and the botafumeiro moment in Santiago. Fly into Biarritz, out of Santiago.
