Walk the Heaphy Track — one of New Zealand's nine Great Walks — across 78 km of Kahurangi National Park from the Nelson Lakes area to the wild West Coast beach at Kohaihai. The track crosses three distinct ecosystems: alpine tussock, beech forest, and palm-studded coastal rainforest. The final two days along the West Coast are among the most memorable in New Zealand walking — nikau palms at 41 degrees south, the most southerly in the world, with blue sea visible between fronds. DOC huts require advance booking.
