Apurimac Region, Peru · Peru
Reach the most remote major Inca site in Peru on foot — Choquequirao, perched on a ridge above the Apurimac Canyon, is accessible only by a gruelling 4-day return trek involving 3,000 m of descent and re-ascent. The site itself dwarfs Machu Picchu in scale but receives a fraction of the visitors. The trail passes through subtropical cloud forest, crosses the roaring Apurimac river, and climbs through terraced agricultural sectors still being excavated by archaeologists. A proposed cable car remains controversial.
