Overview
Trek across the Simien Mountains — a UNESCO World Heritage Site and one of Africa's great highland ranges — to reach Ras Dashen, Ethiopia's highest peak at 4,550 m. The route passes enormous basalt escarpments with 1,500 m vertical drops into the lowlands. Gelada baboons (found nowhere else on Earth) graze on the plateau in troops of hundreds; Ethiopian wolves are sometimes spotted on higher sections. Armed scouts are mandatory due to park regulations rather than any significant safety concern.
