Overview

Uluwatu is where Bali's surf culture concentrates — a left-hand reef break running along the base of dramatic limestone cliffs, accessible only by descending through a sea cave at low tide. The wave is long, consistent, and has multiple take-off zones that accommodate both intermediate and advanced surfers. In the 1970s it was one of the first breaks in Asia to gain international attention; it's been a pilgrimage site ever since. The Bukit Peninsula below the famous temple holds a cluster of world-class breaks within a short drive of each other: Padang Padang (Kelly Slater's favourite), Bingin (perfect shortboard lefts), Impossible (rarely breaking but extraordinary when it does), and Dreamland for beginners. A week based on the Bukit lets you sample the whole lineup based on swell and tide. The cliff-top warung restaurants above Uluwatu are legendary — plastic tables, Bintang beers, and a sunset view over the Indian Ocean with the surf far below. The famous Kecak dance at the Uluwatu temple happens every evening at dusk. Stay on the Bukit in Pecatu, Padang Padang, or Bingin. Accommodation ranges from USD 30 cliff-edge bungalows to boutique boutique villas. Rainy season (November–March) brings offshore winds and cleaner surf; dry season (April–October) offers bigger south swells.
