Overview

Grajagan — G-Land — is where the surf-camp idea was invented: a string of stilted huts in the teak jungle of Alas Purwo National Park, facing a two-kilometre left reef that catches every pulse of Indian Ocean swell. From the treeline you read the sections like a map: Kong's rolling walls at the top, Money Trees' long mechanical barrels in the middle, and Speedies at the bottom, where the wave drains into its shallowest, hollowest act. Day one humbles most visitors: the paddle-outs are long, the reef is live coral, and the trade winds that groom the face all dry season also make the inside sections race. Surf it on the morning tide push, rest through the heat, and go again before dusk while macaques raid the camp kitchen and deer graze the clearing. Access is part of the ritual — fly to Bali, then either speedboat across the strait from Kuta operators or drive via the Ketapang ferry and Banyuwangi. Camps run set packages with meals; book months ahead for June to August. Roughly £950 for eight nights full board. Bring everything you need: the nearest shop is a national park away.
