Mentawai Islands, West Sumatra · Indonesia
The Mentawai Islands host more world-class surf breaks per square kilometre than anywhere else on the planet. HT's, Telescopes, Bank Vaults, Lance's Right, Macaronis — these are names spoken in reverence in every surf shop in the world. They exist because the islands sit directly in the path of Southern Ocean swells generated by storms in the Roaring Forties, funnelled through deep-water channels onto shallow tropical reefs. A live-aboard charter is the standard way to access the breaks: a boat sleeps 8–14 surfers and moves between spots daily based on swell direction, wind, and crowd avoidance. Trips run 7–14 days. The better boats have air conditioning, fresh meals, surf guides who know the breaks intimately, and enough wax to resupply your entire wetsuit bag. The surf is serious — hollow, fast, and often over very shallow reef. Macaronis is the forgiving entry point; Bank Vaults and Lance's Right demand experience in heavy, shallow barrels. Surfers averaging 3+ sessions per week at home will typically be challenged in ways they haven't been before. April through October offers the most consistent Southern Ocean swell. Charter packages typically run USD 3,000–6,000 per person for a 10-day trip, all-inclusive from Padang. Fly to Padang, overnight, then board.
