Arugam Bay Pointbreak Season, Sri Lanka

Overview

While the southwest coast sleeps under monsoon rain, Sri Lanka's east coast wakes up. From May to September, Arugam Bay's Main Point wraps long sand-bottomed right-handers around the headland — a mellow, walling wave that lets you link a dozen turns before the inside reforms. It is the anchor of a whole coastline of points: Whiskey Point and Peanut Farm for softer peelers, Pottuvil Point for sand-dune rides on the bigger pulses, Okanda far south when you want it empty. The rhythm is pure surf-town: tuk-tuk dawn missions along red-dirt tracks, rotis and king coconuts between sessions, and lagoon safaris where elephants wade at dusk. The road to Panama and Okanda skirts Kumana National Park — genuinely check for elephants before walking to the beach at dawn. A-Bay village is backpacker-priced with guesthouses from a few pounds and better boutique options on the point. The catch is the morning glass window: by 11am the cross-shore breeze arrives, so structure your days early. Ten days with guesthouse, tuk-tuk hire and board rental runs about £500 excluding flights. Fly to Colombo, then it is an honest eight-hour drive east.
