Overview

The Matobo Hills are a landscape from the childhood of the world: bald granite domes and impossibly balanced boulder stacks, weathered over three billion years, sheltering one of the densest concentrations of rock art in Africa — San paintings up to 13,000 years old layered across cave walls at Nswatugi and Silozwane. This is also one of the best places on the continent to track white rhino on foot: rangers and licensed guides walk you to within respectful metres of a grazing crash, an encounter that recalibrates your sense of scale. Matobo holds the world's highest density of Verreaux's eagles, riding thermals off the whalebacks, and leopards thread the kopjes at night. Climb to Malindidzimu — 'World's View' — where Cecil Rhodes chose to be buried, a site as contested as it is beautiful. The dry season, April to September, concentrates wildlife and keeps the walking cool. Bulawayo is 45 minutes away; around £600 covers a week of lodges, park fees and guided rhino tracking — remarkable value by safari standards.
