Okavango Delta Mokoro Expedition

Overview

The Okavango is the world's largest inland delta, an improbable ecosystem that flows from Angola's highlands into the Kalahari sand and simply stops — spreading across 15,000 km² of papyrus channels, hippo-grazed floodplains, and palm islands without ever reaching the sea. In July, the flood is at its peak, and the delta transforms into a maze of waterways navigated in mokoro — the traditional dugout canoes of the Bayei and Hambukushu people, poled standing from the stern. Seven days gives you enough time to leave the motorboat safaris behind and move into the deep delta where only mokoro can go. Your poler navigates by memory — there are no maps that capture the detail of these waterways — through channels so narrow that papyrus brushes both sides simultaneously and the smell of crushed reed fills the air. You hear the hippo in the darkness and the poler reads the water surface for crocodile signs. Wild camping is the rule, not the exception. You sleep under canvas metres from active game trails. A bull elephant can walk through camp at 3am; your poler will click softly with his tongue and the elephant will move on. The delta is genuinely remote and genuinely wild. The wildlife density rivals any game reserve in Africa. Elephant herds of 50+ wade through the shallows. Red lechwe scatter in explosions of spray. Fish eagles call from every dead tree. This is safari at its most elemental — no vehicle, no road, nothing between you and the ecosystem except reed and water.
