Overview

The Masai Mara is Kenya's premier game reserve — an extension of Tanzania's Serengeti ecosystem that receives the northern leg of the annual Great Migration and hosts the densest concentration of lions in Africa. Big cats are here in numbers that make spotting routine: lion prides on kopjes, cheetah mothers teaching cubs to hunt, leopards draping impala kills from acacia branches. Black rhino, the most endangered of the Big Five, inhabit the Mara Conservancies around the reserve border. July–October brings the Great Migration — 1.5 million wildebeest, 500,000 zebra, and 250,000 Thomson's gazelle crossing the Mara River from Tanzania in dramatic mass crossings where Nile crocodiles wait in the water. The crossings are unpredictable — herds may hesitate for hours, then cross in minutes. Staying 3+ days maximises the chance of witnessing one. The Mara Conservancies (Olare Motorogi, Mara Naboisho, Mara North) adjacent to the main reserve charge higher fees but restrict vehicle numbers — you may have a cheetah hunt entirely to yourself rather than surrounded by 15 safari vehicles. Fly from Nairobi to Keekorok or Ol Kiombo airstrips directly into the Mara. Accommodation ranges from luxury tented camps (USD 500–1,000 per night) to budget bandas outside the reserve (USD 80–150). All game drives are in open 4WD vehicles with professional Maasai or trained guides.
