Overview

The Ngorongoro Crater is a 260 sq km caldera holding the densest concentration of large mammals on earth — some 25,000 animals, including East Africa's most reliable black rhino sightings. Game drives on the crater floor start in cold dawn mist at 2,300m on the rim, dropping 600m through fig forest to grasslands where lion prides ignore vehicles entirely and flamingos rim the soda shallows of Lake Magadi. Know the rules before you book: walking is not permitted on the crater floor. The walking element of this trip happens on the rim and in the wider conservation area — Maasai-guided routes past Olmoti and Empakaai craters, where you descend with an armed ranger to a flamingo lake inside a forested caldera. Rim camps sit above the cloud inversion, and nights are genuinely cold: pack a warm layer you would trust in Scotland. Fees are the shock. Crater vehicle fees plus conservation and camping charges mean £2,500 per person for a week is realistic, not padded. June-September and December-February give dry tracks and short grass for spotting.
