Jeffreys Bay — J-Bay to anyone who surfs — is one of the five best point breaks on earth. The wave unzips from Boneyards through Point and on to Kitchen Windows in a single right-hand wall that in prime conditions runs for 800 metres without a section. In July during the WSL Championship Tour event, the world's best surfers compete here. The rest of the year, you share it with travelling surfers and a growing local contingent. The Agulhas current pushes cold, nutrient-rich water up from the South Atlantic, keeping the water at 14–18°C year-round — cold enough to require a 4/3mm full suit in winter, when the best swells arrive. The beach itself has evolved from a hippie outpost into a decent surf town with good accommodation and restaurants, but hasn't lost its edge entirely. Beyond J-Bay itself, the Eastern Cape offers remarkable marine wildlife — great white shark diving at Mossel Bay, whale watching from Cape Agulhas (August–November), and the Garden Route national parks within driving distance. A surf trip that combines J-Bay with a broader Eastern Cape road trip makes an exceptional two-week journey. Fly to Port Elizabeth (now Gqeberha), hire a car, and base yourself in J-Bay for surf. Three to seven days at the break itself is typical before extending the road trip.
