Overview

The right-hander off Ngor Island earned its place in surf mythology as the African wave in The Endless Summer, and the pilgrimage still works exactly as it should: a wooden pirogue ferries you across the channel from Ngor beach, you paddle off the island's rocks, and a reeling reef right (with a shorter left on the other side of the peak) delivers you back towards Dakar's skyline. Around the Almadies peninsula — the westernmost tip of Africa — a dozen reefs and beach breaks face every direction, so somewhere is always offshore: Ouakam's dramatic mosque-front peak, Vivier, Club Med and the beach peaks of Yoff. Dakar wraps the surfing in its own energy: teranga hospitality, thieboudienne lunches, sunset drumming on Ngor beach and a young, growing local surf scene with schools and camps at Ngor and Yoff. November to March brings consistent North Atlantic groundswell to the peninsula's north side (best for Ngor Right); the boreal summer flips attention to southern-facing beaches. Water sits at a pleasant 20–26C. The catch is urchins and shallow rock — booties on, and time the tide. Fly direct to Dakar; a week with surf-camp lodging, pirogue fares and airport transfer runs about £450.
