The rock-hewn churches of Tigray are the most extraordinary example of Christian architecture carved into sandstone cliffs, predating the more famous Lalibela by 500 years. Abuna Yemata Guh requires a vertiginous scramble up a sheer cliff face without ropes to reach a 6th century church with its original paintings intact.
