Fes el-Bali: Artisans of the Medina

Overview

Fes el-Bali is the largest car-free urban area in the world: 9,000 lanes where everything still moves by donkey and handcart, and the medieval guild economy never stopped. This six-day immersion gets you past the postcard into the workshops. You watch the Chouara tannery's honeycomb of dye pits from a leather-shop terrace (they hand you mint for the smell), then go deeper: a morning cutting zellige tiles with a mallem at a pottery cooperative, the coppersmiths hammering in Place Seffarine, the Nejjarine museum of woodcraft in its restored fondouk, and Al-Qarawiyyin — founded in 859 and arguably the world's oldest university. A licensed guide on day one is not a luxury, it is the key that unlocks doors; after that, get lost on purpose — the medina funnels downhill to Bab Boujloud eventually. Day-trip options: the Roman mosaics of Volubilis and the whitewashed pilgrimage town of Moulay Idriss. Stay in a riad inside the walls. March–May and October–November dodge the heat that turns the lanes into ovens. Six days with riad, guide days and a workshop runs about £650–£850. Haggling is theatre — play your part cheerfully.
