The lower Omo Valley holds one of Africa's most extraordinary concentrations of living cultures — Hamar, Karo, Mursi, Dassanech — and the difference between a fly-past and a real visit is how you travel. Walking between villages with guides from Jinka or Turmi, sleeping near settlements and timing your days around the markets (Turmi on Mondays, Key Afer on Thursdays) earns slower, warmer encounters: a Hamar bull-jumping initiation if you are fortunate, Karo body-painting on the bluffs above a bend of the Omo River. Go with your ethics switched on. Photography here runs on negotiated payment, and a good local guide who handles it respectfully is the most important booking you will make. The region is remote — 4WD transfers between walking stages, cash only, malaria prophylaxis essential — and conditions and permissions change, so check current advice for South Omo before committing. The dry windows, roughly December-February and June-September, make travel workable. £1,500 for a guided week from Arba Minch or Jinka is a sensible floor.
