Overview

A felucca has no engine, no cabin and no schedule beyond the wind — which is exactly the point. For two days and nights you sail the Nile downstream from Aswan on deck cushions, the captain trimming the lateen sail while Nubian villages, date palms and camel trains slide past at walking pace. You sleep on deck under a sky the pharaohs would recognise, moored to a sandbank, and wake to tea brewed on charcoal. The sailing anchors an eight-day journey through Upper Egypt's greatest hits: Philae temple reached by boat, the double crocodile-and-falcon temple at Kom Ombo at sunset, Edfu's almost intact Temple of Horus, then Luxor for the Valley of the Kings, Karnak's forest of columns and Luxor Temple lit at night. Honest logistics: a true felucca has no loo — support boats or shore stops handle that — and in winter, nights on deck are genuinely cold, so bring a sleeping bag. If that sounds grim, a dahabiya does the same route in comfort at three times the price. October to March is the season.
