Overview

The Lofoten archipelago throws granite walls straight out of the Norwegian Sea, and the E10 threads them by bridge and causeway for 130 kilometres from Fiskebøl to the road's end at Å. On a bike you get the full drama: the cliff gate of Trollfjord by side-trip boat, the cod-drying racks of Henningsvær, and the postcard climax where Reine and Hamnøy's red rorbuer huddle beneath the spire of Olstind. Distances are short but never flat for long, and the Atlantic wind is the real gradient — a headwind day on the exposed causeways can halve your speed. Ride between June and August and the midnight sun removes all time pressure: locals cycle at 11pm in golden light, and Unstad's surf beach or the white sand at Ramberg fill the small hours. Wild camping is legal under Norway's allemannsretten, which rescues the budget — Lofoten hotels are brutal. Waterproof panniers are essential; squalls arrive off the sea with ten minutes' notice. Reach the islands via Svolvær by air or the ferry from Bodø. A week costs around £1,400 with campsites and one or two rorbu nights; the Borg Viking longhouse museum and stockfish soup in Å are compulsory culture stops.
