Te Araroa runs 3,000 kilometres from Cape Reinga's lighthouse to Bluff — the full length of New Zealand and one of the world's youngest great thru-hikes. The North Island alternates beach (90 Mile Beach on day one), farmland, Auckland suburbia and the volcanic heart of the Tongariro Alpine Crossing; it also does something no other major trail does — the route becomes the Whanganui River for 87 kilometres, paddled by canoe. The South Island is the payoff: the Richmond Ranges, Waiau Pass and Southland's tussock tops, with unbridged river crossings that are the trail's genuine hazard. People wait out rain for days, and should. Most hikers walk southbound, starting October to December and finishing around March; 100 to 130 days is typical, resupplying every four to eight days. Backcountry huts on a hut pass mix with camping, and the sandflies south of Nelson become a psychological event of their own. Budget realistically: NZ$8,000–10,000 (£3,500–5,000) covers the walk with hut passes, the canoe section and town zeroes. You do not need to be an athlete to start — but you need river judgement, and the humility to sit still in a country where the weather changes four times a day.
