Overview

A walking safari flips the Mara's power balance: out of the vehicle, at eye level with the grass, you read the plains the way Maasai herders always have — fresh tracks, alarm calls, the wind's direction suddenly mattering very much. Guided walks are not permitted inside the Masai Mara National Reserve itself; they happen in the surrounding conservancies — Naboisho, Olare Motorogi, Mara North — where Maasai-owned land is leased for low-density tourism and armed guides lead you between bush breakfasts and fly camps. Time it for July to October and the great migration is the backdrop: over a million wildebeest and two hundred thousand zebra pouring north from the Serengeti, with river crossings on the Mara and Talek that can run for hours, crocodiles included. Crossings are unpredictable; guides position you at likely banks and you wait, sometimes half a day. Conservancy fees and walking guides make this pricier than a minibus circuit: expect £3,500–4,500 per person for a week, flying into the Mara airstrips from Nairobi Wilson. The trade is exclusivity — a handful of camps instead of a hundred vehicles at a sighting.
