Overview
The desert-adapted elephants of Namibia's Kunene region in the Skeleton Coast hinterland have evolved uniquely over centuries to survive in an environment that receives less than 50 millimetres of annual rainfall. These elephants are significantly different in behaviour and physiology from African savanna elephants, with larger feet and flatter backs that allow them to cover 70 kilometres daily searching for water. Finding them on foot with a Himba tracker is one of Africa's most exclusive safari experiences.
