Tierra del Fuego Ski Touring

Overview

Ushuaia calls itself the End of the World, and ski touring here feels like it: from the summits of the Martial range you look straight down onto the Beagle Channel, with the islands toward Cape Horn scattered beyond. The touring is short-approach and serious -- couloirs and treeless faces dropping toward salt water, lenga forest glades lower down, and almost nobody on any of it. Cerro Castor, the world's southernmost ski resort, makes a civilised warm-up and a bad-weather fallback with reliably cold, dry snow. June to August is midwinter: at 55 degrees south the days shrink to about seven hours around the solstice, so tours are planned tight and headtorches carried always. The maritime snowpack changes by the hour, avalanche information is thin and rescue is a long way off -- hire a local UIAGM guide. Fly in via Buenos Aires; guided touring weeks run 1,500-2,500 pounds excluding flights. Bring a full avalanche kit and ski crampons for the wind-hammered ridgelines.
