Overview

Spring in Chile's Lakes District means volcano skiing: a week ticking off perfect cones, skinning at dawn on refrozen ash-and-ice and descending 1,500m of buttered corn by lunchtime. Villarrica is the centrepiece — a smoking, actively degassing summit where you transition with sulphur on the wind before one of the great ski descents of the Americas, all the way back towards Pucón's black-sand lake beaches. Around it you rotate through Llaima, rising over Conguillío's monkey-puzzle forests, wind-scoured Lonquimay, and — if you extend south — Osorno above Lago Llanquihue. The variable nobody controls: SERNAGEOMIN's volcanic alert levels. When Villarrica grumbles, the summit closes and your guide swaps in another peak; that flexibility is why you book a safari rather than a single mountain. Base yourself in Pucón (fly Santiago to Temuco, then 90 minutes by road), where hot springs and craft beer fill the afternoons. September to November gives the best corn cycles.
