Tucupita · Venezuela
The Orinoco Delta in eastern Venezuela contains a maze of over 40 river channels spreading across 22,000 square kilometres of tropical wetland where the Warao people have lived on stilted palafito houses above the river since pre-Columbian times. Navigating by dugout canoe through flooded igapo forest to reach remote Warao communities and witness their tradition of palm weaving and fishing is a journey into a largely unchanged pre-industrial world. Pink river dolphins and anacondas are regular sightings.
