Paddle deep into the Ecuadorian Amazon from the Napo River tributaries into seldom-visited várzea forest. Launch from a riverside community near Tena, navigate winding blackwater streams, and camp on sandy beaches beneath cathedral jungle. Your guide — a Kichwa elder who has spent a lifetime reading the river — teaches you to identify medicinal plants, set fish traps, and read weather by cloud formation over the canopy. Days are spent paddling 20–35 km through shifting channels, pulling ashore to explore oxbow lakes teeming with caimans, river dolphins, and giant otters. Nights are spent in hammocks or simple riverside lodges, listening to howler monkeys and the chorus of ten thousand frogs. The river demands constant attention: reading currents, scouting shallows, and portaging around log jams. By the end you will have developed instincts that no classroom can teach.
