Overview

From a kayak, Torres del Paine rearranges itself: the granite towers and black-capped cuernos rise not from a trail but straight out of the water, and on Lago Grey you thread between stranded icebergs the size of houses, calved from the glacier at the lake's head. Guided multi-day trips link Grey, Pehoé and the Río Serrano, camping on shores no W-trekker reaches, with condors overhead and the massif turning red at dawn. Wind is the whole game in Patagonia. The westerlies can hit 80 km/h with little warning and flatten the lake into spray, so itineraries build in waiting days and guides make the call each morning — accept that a weather day in camp is part of the trip, not a failure of it. You paddle in a drysuit regardless of season; the water is glacial. November to March is the season, with December-February the long-daylight core.
