Overview

Kayakers call the Futaleufú the finest whitewater river on Earth with a straight face. It pours out of the Andes into Chilean Patagonia an improbable glacial blue, and a week here is structured like an apprenticeship: mornings drilling technique on the forgiving Bridge-to-Bridge section, afternoons stepping up through the river's famous named water — Mundaca, Casa de Piedra, and eventually the wave-train of Terminator for those who earn it. You run it in paddle rafts with safety kayakers shadowing every line, or in your own kayak if you bring a solid roll. Off the water there is camp life Patagonian-style: wood-fired hot tubs, asado under southern stars, and valley hikes when your shoulders demand a rest day. The river sits a long way from anywhere — part of its magic. Fly to Puerto Montt and ferry-bus via Chaitén, or come overland from Esquel in Argentina; either way budget a full travel day. Camps run December to March, from about £2,600 for a week, all meals and river gear included. The variable is the swim: day one is rescue drills in 12C water, and the guides mean it — the Futaleufú is generous but it is not casual. Book peak weeks months ahead; the camps are small.
