Alice Springs · Australia
The Larapinta Trail runs 230 km along the backbone of the West MacDonnell Ranges from Alice Springs to Mount Sonder, through ancient quartzite ranges, red gorges, and desert waterholes where black-footed rock wallabies come to drink at dusk. The trail is dry — carry 6 litres minimum between water caches — and remote. Walking in June–August brings mild days and cold nights; April–May and September–October offer wildflower colour. Aboriginal Arrernte country requires cultural awareness.
