A camel trek from M'Hamid into the Erg Chigaga — Morocco's remotest and most untouched dune field, 55 km from the last road — takes three days and two nights in the full silence of the deep desert. Arriving at the caravanserai camp as the sun sets behind 100 m dunes turns the whole landscape gold, then pink, then purple. Stars at this longitude and altitude are extraordinary. This is the real Sahara, not the day-tripper dunes.
