Bwindi · Uganda
Bwindi Impenetrable Forest in southwest Uganda harbours half the world's remaining mountain gorillas — roughly 460 individuals in around 40 habituated groups. Trekking to spend the permitted one hour with a gorilla family is among the most powerful wildlife encounters on earth. The trek itself through dense rainforest on steep, muddy slopes takes 30 minutes to 6 hours depending on where the gorillas rested. Permits sell out months ahead at USD 700 each.
