North Sea Coast: Hook of Holland to Skagen

Overview

Follow the North Sea Cycle Route (EuroVelo 12) up the continent's edge: roughly 1,300km from Hook of Holland to Skagen at Denmark's tip, where the North Sea and Kattegat visibly collide over the Grenen sandbar. This is dune-and-dyke touring at its purest — the Netherlands' immaculate fietspaden through the Kennemerland dunes, the surreal 32km ruler-line of the Afsluitdijk, East Frisia's sheep-cropped sea dykes, and Jutland's heathered west coast where the path runs through marram grass metres from the surf. It is technically easy and logistically frictionless: campsites and hostels every 20km, bakeries on schedule, and trains at every escape point. The variable that catches people out is wind. The prevailing south-westerly is a tailwind northbound — ride it that way — but a stiff northerly can turn a 100km dyke day into a grovel, and there is no shelter on a dyke. Fourteen days at around 95km/day suits a loaded tourer. Train to Rotterdam starts it cleanly; from Skagen, rails run home via Hamburg. Budget around £1,300 mixing campsites, hostels and harbour-town splurges on herring and pastries. June and July give 17-hour days.
