Busua Beach Break Week, Ghana

Overview

Busua is West Africa's easiest surf gateway: a wide, palm-lined bay in Ghana's Western Region where warm, forgiving beach-break peaks roll in all year and the country's first surf shops and schools — grown from the local community — will have you standing in a session or two. At the west end, Black Mamba point adds a proper left when swell picks up, and a short canoe or drive around the headland brings you to Dixcove's fishing harbour and further empty corners. The town runs on juice bars, beach football and highlife music; homestays and simple beach lodges cost little, and the surf community welcomes visitors who muck in. Beginners and cruisy intermediates both score daily, and hire fees visibly support local instructors. Fly to Accra, then it is a four-to-five-hour drive west via Takoradi (public transport works; private transfer is easier with boards). March to August brings the most consistent southern swell; rainy-season showers pass quickly. The variable is water quality after heavy rain near the lagoon mouth — surf the main bay peaks. A week with lodge, meals and daily lessons is about £350, among the best-value surf weeks anywhere.
