Where the Danube finally gives up, 2,860 kilometres from the Black Forest, it dissolves into Europe's greatest wetland: 4,000 square kilometres of reedbeds, willow-lined channels and lakes that hold the continent's largest white pelican colonies and its rarest breeder, the Dalmatian pelican. From a small boat at dawn you watch fishing flotillas of pelicans herd shoals in synchronised horseshoes while pygmy cormorants, rollers and bee-eaters cross overhead — 300-plus species use the delta, and in May and June it simply thrums. Life here moves at boat speed. Base in Tulcea for a night, then push down-channel to the Lipovan fishing villages — Mila 23, Crisan, or Sfântu Gheorghe at the river's mouth — for pensiune stays built on fish soup and home wine. Guided small-boat days work the back channels that big hotel-boats cannot enter; kayaks get quieter still. June mosquitoes are legendary — cover up and bring serious repellent — and wind can cancel small-boat days on the open lakes, so keep the itinerary loose. Access is a flight to Bucharest, then four hours by road to Tulcea. Five days with boats, guide, full-board pensiunes and transfers runs around £500–£700.
