Snow Leopard Vigil at Kibber

Overview

The whistle comes down the valley like a relay — spotter to spotter — and every scope on the ridge swings to the same scree slope. It takes you a full minute to see what they see: a grey cat on grey rock, flowing downhill towards a herd of blue sheep. In late winter the snow leopards of Spiti descend with their prey, and the villages around Kibber, at 4,200 metres, have turned watching them into a quiet local economy of trackers, homestays and radio calls. This is cold-weather patience hunting. Days are spent glassing from ridgelines above the Parilungbi gorge, often for hours, at minus fifteen; sightings are typically 200–500 metres through optics, occasionally heart-stoppingly closer. Success rates in February–March are remarkably high — most week-long trips connect — with ibex, red fox, bearded vultures and staggering night skies as the supporting cast. Winter access is the catch: the Manali passes shut, so it is a two-day drive from Shimla through Kinnaur, with an acclimatisation night in Kaza essential before sleeping at Kibber. Homestays are warm-hearted and basic (bucket washes, dry loos). Eight days with transfers, local spotters and full board runs about £1,800–£2,300.
