Overview

The pant-hoots start somewhere off to your left, ricochet through the fig canopy, and suddenly the forest is moving: black shapes swinging overhead, a big male barrelling down a trunk to drum on a buttress root two metres from your boots. Kibale protects East Africa's greatest density of primates, and its habituated chimp communities near Kanyanchu give the most reliable close encounters on the continent. The standard trek buys you one hour with the apes; the Chimpanzee Habituation Experience puts you alongside researchers from the 6am nest-leaving to late afternoon — exhausting, muddy and unforgettable. Chimps travel fast on the ground, so expect sweaty scrambles through vines rather than a stroll. Between treks, walk the Bigodi wetland for great blue turacos and red colobus, and swim-gaze at the Fort Portal crater lakes. Permits (around £160 standard, £230 habituation) book through the Uganda Wildlife Authority and sell out in the December–February and June–September dry seasons. Fort Portal, five hours' drive from Entebbe, is the base. Four days with permits, guiding and mid-range lodges runs to about £1,000–£1,200, and pairs naturally with gorillas in Bwindi.
