Mountain gorillas get the headlines; Odzala is the harder, wilder other half of the story. Deep in the Congo Basin's second-largest rainforest block, trackers read bent marantaca stems to bring you — masked, silent, sweating — into the presence of a habituated western lowland gorilla family: a silverback stripping stems while youngsters somersault through the understorey. Sightlines are short in this thicket, which makes the encounters feel less like viewing and more like being admitted. The classic circuit links three camps: Ngaga for the gorillas, Lango for waist-deep bai walks among forest buffalo and grey parrots, Mboko for kayaking the Lekoli past forest elephants. Wildlife here is genuinely wild — this is expedition-flavoured safari, not the Mara. Be clear-eyed about logistics: access is by light aircraft charter from Brazzaville, departures are fixed-date, and the all-in land cost for a week runs £6,500–£8,500 per person. June to September is the drier window. Yellow fever certificate and malaria prophylaxis are non-negotiable, and a respiratory mask is required within range of the gorillas.
