Overview

Surfing Hokkaido in January is as strange and wonderful as it sounds: paddling out at Itanki Beach in Muroran while snow settles on your board bag, sea smoke curling off 6C water, and a volcanic headland white to the tideline. The Pacific coast around Muroran and Tomakomai catches winter groundswell that wraps clean into the bays, while the northwest monsoon delivers windswell to the Sea of Japan side — a two-coast strategy with mountains in between. This is the most committed cold-water surfing in Asia, and the reward structure is pure Japan: session, then onsen, then miso ramen, repeat. The local crews are small, hardy and welcoming to travellers who observe lineup etiquette and bow to the car-park elders. Many pair it with Rusutsu powder days. Fly to New Chitose (Sapporo); Muroran is ninety minutes by car, and a rental with snow tyres is essential. The variable is brutal weather logic — the same low that sends swell also sends blizzards, so flexibility and a good forecast eye decide your week. Around £900 for seven days with guesthouse, car and onsen habit. Rubber matters: 6/5/4 hooded suits, 7mm boots, mitts, and no heroics.
