Bundoran calls itself Ireland's surf capital with a straight face, because The Peak delivers: an A-frame reef in the middle of town that offers a long, workable left and a shorter, barrelling right over flat limestone, all within a stroll of chip shops and pubs with turf fires. Donegal Bay acts as a swell funnel for Atlantic lows, and within twenty minutes' drive you have Tullan Strand's beach peaks for learners, Rossnowlagh's beginner rollers, and heavier reefs like PMPA for those with the skills. It is the classic long-weekend strike: watch the charts, book late, fly to Knock or Dublin, and score. September to December brings the magic combination of lingering sea warmth (13–14C) and organised groundswell; spring is quieter and cleaner. The town does surf infrastructure properly — schools, hire, board shapers and surf lodges from £25 a night — and après-surf means live music rather than protein shakes. The variable is wind: The Peak needs a southeasterly quadrant and mid tide, and Irish weather changes hourly, so stay mobile between the bay's corners. A four-day weekend with lodge bed, fuel and hire comes to about £300.
