Overview

Europe's first World Surfing Reserve packs seven named breaks into four kilometres of clifftop coast, and you can walk between most of them before breakfast. Ribeira d'Ilhas is the amphitheatre centrepiece — a long, forgiving right point that hosted world championships — while Coxos, round the next headland, is the best right in continental Europe when the sand and swell align. In between sit Pedra Branca, Reef and Crazy Left for the days you want consequence. The town itself is the other half of the trip: a whitewashed fishing village of blue-trimmed lanes, grilled fish and pastelarias, an hour's bus from Lisbon. Surf camps and guesthouses are plentiful, but book ahead for September and October when the whole surf world seems to route through. The catch is wind: the nortada blows out afternoons all summer, so dawn patrols are non-negotiable, and the best combination of clean groundswell and light offshores comes in autumn and spring. A week with a guesthouse room, board hire and a few guided sessions runs about £600 — one of the best-value world-class surf weeks anywhere.
